If you are afflicted with facial darkening due to sun damage, heredity, skin disorders or hyper-pigmentation, there are natural fruit masks that you can make at home to help lighten your skin tone. Certain fruits contain components that lighten skin and reduce brown spots and freckles. However, these at-home skin lightening treatments must be used on a regular basis to maintain a lighter appearance and must be followed with a high-quality moisturizer to rehydrate skin, or skin may dry out and crack from over-exfoliation.

Lemons

Lemons contain Vitamin C and citric acid, two skin-lightening constituents. Apply approximately 1/2 tsp. of freshly squeezed lemon juice to the face with a cotton ball or wash cloth. Leave it on for about 10 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water and pat dry. If you have dark spots on your face, such as age spots, cover spots with lemon slices and let them sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse your face with warm water and pat dry. Repeat two to three times per week.

Bilberries

Bilberries, a relative of blueberries, contain tannins that have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are useful to treat facial hyper-pigmentation. Crush 4 to 8 ounces of fresh bilberries in a blender. Apply the bilberry mash to your face and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water. If you cannot purchase fresh bilberries in your area, buy a high-quality bilberry extract from an online herbal retailer or local health food store. Apply 1 to 2 tsp. of bilberry extract to your face and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes; rinse off with warm water. Repeat two to three times a week.

Papaya

Papaya contains papain, an enzyme that removes dead skin and helps to reduce facial freckles and brown spots, says Dermaxine Bio-Cellular Skin Care Products. Papaya is widely used in commercial skin lightening products, but can be used at home to achieve the same effect. Peel a papaya and cut it in half. Remove any seeds. Cut the papaya into small chunks and blend them on low for 20 to 30 seconds. Apply the papaya pulp to face and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Repeat two to three times per week.

Alternately, blend 1/2 cup each papaya, pineapple and pumpkin into a paste-like consistency. Add the paste to one packet unflavored gelatin and heat it until the gelatin dissolves. Let it cool until the mixture is comfortable to the touch. Apply it to the entire face and leave it on for 20 minutes. Peel the mask off and discard it.
