Acne is a skin condition that typically begins during adolescence and may extend into your 20s or 30s, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." This condition is characterized by excess production of sebum, a substance that can block pores and contribute to raised, inflamed pimples. Although diet cannot cure acne, certain foods may help control acne outbreaks. Check with your doctor before changing your diet to address acne. Nutrition should not replace the care of a physician or dermatologist.

Lean Proteins

A diet rich in lean proteins may help you control acne outbreaks, according to the Every Diet website. Proteins may help reduce your body's production of enzymes that stimulate skin oil production. Choose lean protein sources such as chickpeas, black beans, tofu and seitan, a meat replacement made from wheat gluten. Avoid red meats, dairy products and eggs, which are high in saturated fats that may contribute to clogged pores.

Zinc-rich Foods

Zinc is a trace mineral that offers antibacterial properties, according to the Balches. Foods containing this mineral may help clear bacteria from the skin that can clog pores and lead to acne outbreaks. Zinc may also help regulate your skin's production of oils. Soybeans, shellfish, whole-wheat products, raw nuts and sunflower seeds are abundant sources of zinc.

High-fiber Foods

Dietary fiber is a necessary nutrient for controlling acne outbreaks, according to the Balches. This component of foods may help clear toxins from the bloodstream, which may reduce the occurrence of pimples. Vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, artichokes and kale are rich sources of dietary fiber. You can also obtain this nutrient from nuts, seeds and whole-grain breads and pastas.

Oxalic Acid-rich Foods

According to the Balches, oxalic acid is an organic acid that may help regular skin oil production and keep the pores of your skin clear. You can obtain oxalic acid from food sources such as almonds, Swiss chard, rhubarb, cashews and beet greens.
