Foods to Combat Acne

Acne, also referred to as acne vulgaris, is a common skin condition in the United States. Around 40 to 50 million Americans suffer from acne each year, mostly teenagers and young adults. Fortunately, a variety of foods contain vitamins that can help to combat acne.

Carrots

Carrots contain vitamin A, which is important for healthy skin. The Vitamins Diary states that vitamin A helps to keep the protective tissue of the skin strong and prevent it from being damaged. Vitamin A helps to reduce acne formation by halting the production of sebum, natural oils found on your skin. Also, it helps the body reduce oxidative stress and also works as an antioxidant to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

Oysters

Oysters are the richest source of zinc, which can help to combat acne. According to the Vitamin & Nutrition Center, zinc helps to heal tissues that may be damaged and helps treat acne scarring. Zinc prevents acne by regulating your oil glands. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that taking oral supplements in combination with the topical antibiotic erythromycin may be effective in reducing acne formation.

Grains

Grains are good sources of B vitamins. This group of vitamins is important for acne treatment. Vitamin B6 helps to control oil production on the skin and helps treat premenstrual acne breakouts due to hormonal imbalances. Vitamin B5 helps the body deal with stress, which may trigger acne in certain people. Low amounts of vitamin B1, B2 and B5 may result in acne.
