Acne, also called acne vulgaris, can develop because of a combination of four key factors, which include excess oil, clogged pores, inflammation and bacteria. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, or AAD, around 40 to 50 million Americans currently suffer from acne. Luckily, there is a selection of foods you can eat everyday that will help treat acne.

Grains

Grains are a source of B vitamins, which are essential for the treatment of acne. Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid helps the body reduce stress, which can cause acne in some people. Vitamin B3 or niacinamide is important for healthy skin as it helps improve circulation and also helps metabolize fats and proteins. Vitamin B1 or thiamine acts as an antioxidant against bacteria and enhances circulation. According to the Vitamins & Nutrition Center, inadequate amounts of vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5 and B5 can lead to acne.

Carrots

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which protects your skin cells and tissues from bacteria and viruses. It helps prevent acne by reducing the production of sebum, a natural oil made by your body. Too much sebum is considered excess oil, which may cause acne according to the Vitamin & Nutrition Center. Also, vitamin A helps your body cope with oxidative stress.

Oysters

Oysters are a rich source of zinc. This mineral helps treat acne by controlling the activity of your oil glands to prevent excess oil from being produced. Zinc removes acne scarring and heals tissues that may be damaged. Zinc also prevents and fights free-radicals. A low level of zinc in your body can lead to acne. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, using a form of zinc in combination with topical antibiotic erythromycin is effective for treating acne.
