The gallbladder, an organ located below the liver, produces bile for the stomach, aiding in food digestion. Inflammation of the gallbladder may result from infection or gallstones, and this will often lead to severe pain, nausea and vomiting, what many refer to as a gallbladder attack. Diet plays a role in the formation of gallstones, and certain foods may trigger an attack. Knowing the foods to avoid and which foods offer a better choice may help prevent an attack.

High Fat

Foods high in saturated fat may trigger the onset of a gallbladder attack, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. These foods may include fatty cuts of meat, butter and milk products with high fat content. Fried foods often cause an attack as a result of certain oils, such as corn oil and peanut oil. Many processed or packaged items contain high amounts of fats as well, and a person with chronic episodes of gallbladder attacks should read labels carefully to avoid foods with a high fat content.

The best choices for a low-fat diet include lean meats, such as chicken breasts without skin, and fish. Skim milk and low fat cheeses, such as mozzarella, may offer healthy choices that may lead to prevention of a gallbladder attack.

Low Fiber

Consistently eating foods low in fiber may increase the risk for gallstones, which may trigger an attack. Many processed foods contain little fiber, and these foods may include items such as chips, crackers and white breads.

In a healthy diet, a woman should have a fiber intake around 25g daily, and men should have 38g, explains MayoClinic.com. Many whole foods offer significant amounts of fiber. Good fruit choices include apples, which have more than 4g fiber; pears, with more than 5g, and raspberries, which contain 8g in a 1 cup serving. Vegetables offer good fiber choices as well. A single, medium-sized artichoke has more than 10g of fiber and 1 cup of cooked peas offers nearly 9g. Other fiber-rich foods consist of beans, whole grain pasta and brown rice.

Sugar

Sugary foods may lead to gallstones and subsequent attacks. Foods may include items, such as cookies, cakes, doughnuts and candy. Since the body converts carbohydrates into sugar, eating high amounts of carbohydrates may lead to gallstones as well, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center. Instead of a sugary treat, a person may try eating a piece of fruit or having a serving of sorbet. Eating whole grain foods, such as pasta and breads, will offer greater benefits than carbohydrates, such as white bread, white rice or processed foods, such as potato chips.
