Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a condition that affects the large intestine. Symptoms include abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhea, constipation, gas, mucus in the feces and bloating. According to FamilyDoctor.org, foods do not cause IBS, but they may trigger symptoms of discomfort associated with this condition.

Raw Vegetables

According to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, raw vegetables may increase the symptoms of diarrhea associated with IBS. Specific sources include broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Consuming vegetables steamed may produce less signs of discomfort. Alternatively, for those experiencing constipation in association with IBS, fresh vegetables may be helpful.

Foods High In Fat

Foods high in fat may cause either diarrhea or constipation in people with IBS. According to FamilyDoctor.org, avoiding fatty foods may provide relief from IBS symptoms. Specific sources to avoid include fried meats, bacon, onion rings and french fries. Other forms of cooking, such as baking and roasting, may be less likely to trigger IBS symptoms.

Dairy

According to Help For IBS, dairy may trigger IBS symptoms. Specific sources of discomfort include high fat yogurt, milk and cheese. Low fat dairy, however, may also cause problems since it contains both whey and casein. These are proteins that commonly cause digestive distress. Other dairy sources that may trigger symptoms include sour cream, butter and ice cream.
