Foods That Trigger Herpes Breakouts

The herpes simplex virus is a sexually transmitted organism that resides dormant in the human body and occasionally causes outbreaks in an infected person. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that one in six people in the United States is infected with the herpes virus. Although it is not possible to permanently prevent all outbreaks, you can decrease incidence of recurrence by reducing dietary arginine consumption, increasing intake of lysine, and consuming foods with a high lysine to arginine ratio.

Arginine-Rich Foods

Arginine is an essential amino acid, meaning that it is not manufactured by your body and must be obtained through diet. Arginine is used by the herpes virus to multiply and reproduce. It is highest in red meat, nuts, peanut butter, grapes, blueberries, yams and oatmeal.

Lysine-Rich Foods

Lysine, also an amino acid, may help you prevent or shorten herpes outbreaks. Lysine can be ingested through your diet or in pill form. Foods that are high in lysine include condensed milk, buttermilk, ricotta cheese, egg nog, chicken and sherbert.

Arginine to Lysine Ratio

It is undesirable and nearly impossible to cut arginine foods from your diet completely. In fact, according to the National Library of Medicine, it has many medicinal uses including help with treatment of congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and erectile dysfunction. To reap the health benefits of arginine, choose foods that contain both arginine and lysine. Foods that have a high lysine to arginine ratio include yogurt, cheese, papaya, milk, apples, avocado and salmon.
