Overview

Between 40 and 50 million Americans have acne. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 85 percent of those are teenagers. To help prevent acne formation or irritation, you can avoid a selection of foods that can potentially make acne worse.

Causes

Research has discovered a number of key factors that contribute to acne development. These include inflammation, excess oil, bacteria and clogged pores. Sebum is excess oil your body makes to prevent dry skin. During adolescence, however, hormones change, sometimes creating too much sebum. This causes hair follicles to clog, keeping bacteria trapped and leading to inflammation.

Bread

According to a 2002 article of "BBC News Health" online, eating too much bread may result in acne in teenagers. The article goes on to say that some scientists believe that refined grain and sugar in bread products can your insulin levels to rise. A spike in insulin can lead to acne development. As bread is an easy food to digest, it may cause excess production of insulin and insulin-like growth factor, IGF--1.

Sugar

A study at Dartmouth Medical School found that foods that contain significant amounts of sugar content and other carbohydrates can lead to acne breakouts. The study reported that thigh glycemic loads have a positive affect on serum insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1, raising them and promoting the production of androgens, which can contribute to acne formation.

Milk

According to an article in "Science Daily," dermatologists agree that milk can contribute to teenage acne formation. They disagree, however, on why this occurs. University of Buffalo dermatologist Harvey Arbesman, M.D., says iodine is the substance in milk that leads to acne. Arbesman goes on to say that there has been a well-established connection of iodine intake affecting acne since the 1960s. In addition, he says that farmers give their cows iodine-fortified feed to prevent infections. Due to this, Arbesman has asked his acne patients to decrease their daily dairy intake.
