Acne is a skin disorder, characterized by clogged pores, blackheads and pimples. Acne is created when the sebaceous glands in the skin over produce oil, which then combines with dead skin cells. This oily combination then clogs the oil duct and becomes inflamed. Acne most commonly affects the nose, forehead, cheeks and chin. According to the University of Maryland's Medical Center, between 17 and 45 million people have acne, making it the most common skin disease in the United States.

Iodine Rich Foods

According to Acne Online, a community of dermatologists, doctors, and acne sufferers, iodine is a common irritant to acne in many people. Food rich in iodine include seafood like shrimp, lobster and crab. Sea vegetables such as nori and kelp, and green leafy vegetables like spinach are also high in this mineral. It is not clear whether iodine is an irritant to the root cause of acne or it is an interference with the treatment of acne, but avoiding it has shown success in some people. Excessive iodine intake can effect thyroid function, which is a hormone secreting gland in the body responsible for some stress management and metabolism functions, so this may be the reason why iodine has a link to acne.

Omega-6 Polyunsaturated and Trans-Fats

The omega fats are generally regarded as healthy fats. This is true, however too much intake of omega-6 specifically has inflammatory effects in the body. When the skin's pores are clogged and become irritated this excessive inflammation can contribute to the severity of the acne sores that result. Too many trans-fats in the diet has a similar effect, and this is why butter, chips, chocolates and other junk foods are often blamed for acne. These pro-inflammatory fats are needed in the body for things, such as blood clotting and for fighting infections, but when they are consumed in excess they contribute to the redness, swelling, and irritation around acne sores. Foods high in omega-6 and trans fats are many and include bacon, all kinds of salted or preserved meats, fast food burgers, and baked goods such as pie crust and turnovers.

Simple Carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates is the name for foods which have been highly processed, and convert to sugar rapidly in the body. This also accelerates the conversion of fatty acids into pro-inflammatory hormones which worsen acne symptoms. Foods which are considered simple carbohydrates include white bread products, candies, cookies, sugar based cereals, corn bread, crackers, doughnuts, fruit juice cocktail, jam, ice cream, muffins, pasta, pancakes, pizza crust, puddings, white rice and waffles to name just a few.

Food Alllergies

According to Dr. Elson Haas in his book, ''Staying Healthy With Nutrition,'' food allergies and sensitivities can affect the health of the skin. When the body has an inflammatory reaction, even in the skin, this is actually an allergic reaction which can be linked to food. Most people consider allergic reactions to be among hives, or hospitalization extremities. However this inflammatory reaction of the skin can also be recognized as a slight to mild allergic reaction. Those who already have an acne problem who keep eating foods they may have slight allergies to, can be contributing to the acne problem and making it worse. Common allergens which are widely unrecognized include milk and dairy products, eggs, peanuts, seafood, shellfish, soy, gluten and wheat. Talk to a nutritionist about addressing food allergy concerns to learn how to design a diet plan which will unveil underlying allergies.
