Foods That Help Fight Acne

Acne is a common disorder experienced predominantly by teenage girls and boys but can affect adults as well. These skin lesions or pimples usually disappear once we get into our twenties and if we're lucky don't show up again. Hormones, stress and diet are thought to be contributors to acne, but there isn't a general consensus on any one trigger.

What is Acne?

Acne is chronic inflammation of the glands of the skin and hair follicles and can exhibit as blackheads, papules, pustules or cysts. Richard Mabey, author of "The New Age Herbalist" describes acne as "sebaceous glands which produce oil or sebum and maintain the suppleness of the skin". Acne is often related to the activity level of sex hormones, worsening when levels are elevated.

Helpful Foods

Henry Lu recommends in his book "Chinese System of Food Cures, eating cucumber to help clear acne. Cucumber is cooling nature is thought to be effective in calming down the inflammation associated with pimples. Mabey recommends eating a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables, high fiber food, and avoiding processed foods. High fiber foods are considered an excellent way to remove toxins from the body and reduce acne outbreaks. The high content of Vitamin A found in carrot juice has also been found of benefit if consumed daily. Other foods to consider are cabbage, apple and beetroot juice. Mabey recommends taking 15 mg of zinc daily to help with absorption of the Vitamin A, and pumpkin seeds, a good source of natural zinc. Taking herbs, such as Echinacea, dandelion, kelp, burdock, licorice and sassafras, in capsule form or as a tea is also recommended to help purify the blood.

External Applications

Dr. Vasant Lad, in his book "Ayurveda: The Science of Self-Healing" suggests applying a turmeric and sandalwood powder paste externally on acne, as well as drinking four ounces of aloe vera juice twice daily until the acne clears. Another herbal remedy using one part eucalyptus leaves and two parts elder flowers can be helpful as an aromatic steam, placing the herbs in a pint of boiled water and covering the head with cloth over the bowl for 5 minutes.
