Foods That Help Acne & Skin

The link between food and skin conditions, especially acne, is a point of contention in the medical community. A 2004 issue of the "Journal of the American Medical Association," (JAMA) says that certain foods do not cause acne and skin problems. However, different people have different reactions to food and allergies that may trigger an increase in acne or other skin conditions. Studies reported in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" and by Australian RMIT University suggest that following a diet that includes fiber, lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids and essential vitamins can help alleviate acne and other skin problems.

High-fiber Foods

Foods that are high in fiber are considered low-glycemic-load foods because they do not cause a sharp increase in blood glucose levels after eating, according to Medical News Today. Fiber-rich foods such as whole grain breads and pastas, brown rice, beans and legumes may help skin look better because they stabilize blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels that are too high can change the way the body handles insulin and may create other hormonal changes that can affect the skin. A low-glycemic diet can replace high-glycemic-load foods such as processed grains, white potatoes and sugary foods, according to RMIT.

Proteins

A study reported in the July 2007 issue of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" suggests that the addition of lean protein sources in addition to low-glycemic index foods, may help people achieve clearer skin in some cases. The study participants followed a diet that included high fiber foods, as well as fish, poultry products and lean cuts of meat. At the end of the study, the people who followed the protein and low-glycemic diet showed a significant decrease in the number of acne lesions as well as less overall inflammation.

Omega-3

People who have problem skin may find improvement through an increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids. These essential nutrients are found in several kinds of fish, including salmon and halibut, as well as in walnuts and flax seed products. According to WHFoods, an online reference associated with the George Mateljan Foundation, omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and can keep skin moisturized, which reduces the risk of itching, irritation and dermatitis.

Antioxidants

Vitamins that are antioxidants may help reduce acne and improve skin condition, according to Acne.com, an online resource about causes and treatments for acne. Vitamins E, B and A can all be beneficial to acne and can help skin clear more quickly because they act as protection against free radicals in your body. Foods that are high in these nutrients, including nuts, eggs, leafy green vegetables and orange-colored foods such as cantaloupe, carrots and squash, may lessen the intensity of acne breakouts and could possible prevent future blemishes, as well.
