The American Academy of Dermatology states that approximately 40 million to 50 million Americans suffer from acne. Also called acne vulgaris, it is most common on young adults; however, anybody can suffer from the condition. Four key players contribute to the formation of acne: bacteria, clogged pores, inflammation and excess oil.

Carrots

Vitamin A can be found in carrots. According to the Vitamins Diary, vitamin A helps keep the tissue protecting your skin strong and firm, and it prevents acne by reducing the production of sebum. It also helps flush toxins out of your body, thus improving skin texture. The Acne Resource Center says that retinol is a type of vitamin A used to help treat large pimples.

Oysters

Oysters are a rich source of the mineral zinc. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, zinc has been found to help improve acne. There is evidence that when zinc is used in conjunction with the topical antibiotic erythromycin, it is effective in treating acne. Zinc helps control the activity of your oil glands, which reduces the acne that can form due to excess oil production. However, the center notes that more studies are needed to confirm the benefit of zinc in acne treatment, particularly at nontoxic dosages, so it is important to talk with your doctor before considering a zinc supplement to treat acne.

Grains

Grains contain plenty of B vitamins, which are important for acne care. According to the Vitamins & Nutrition Center, vitamin B1 or thiamine helps remove bacteria from the skin and acts as an antioxidant. Vitamin B6 or pantothenic acid helps reduce stress, which may cause acne in some people. A deficiency in vitamins B2, B3 and B5 can result in acne formation.
