Acne is a condition that causes red bumps, pustules, blackheads and whiteheads on a person's skin. While acne often is associated with teenagers due to fluctuating hormonal levels, acne can extend well into adulthood. When hormones are not to blame, examining lifestyle habits, such as regular face washing and diet. A healthy diet may not be the cure-all to your skin woes. A study published in the August 2007 edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that eating a diet filled with healthy foods can help the fight against acne.

High-fiber Foods

High-fiber foods are what is known as low-glycemic index foods. This means that these foods will digest more slowly in the body. According to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, foods that are high in fiber are low-glycemic index foods.

High-fiber foods can be found in a variety of food groups, including fruits, grains, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes. Options from the fruit group include raspberries, pears, bananas and raisins. Those in the grains category include spaghetti, barley, oat bran muffins, air-popped popcorn and whole-wheat bread. Legumes, nuts and seeds options include split peas, almonds, pecans, pistachios, lima beans and baked beans. High-fiber vegetables such as cooked artichokes, peas, broccoli, sweet corn, Brussels sprouts, potatoes with skin, tomato paste and raw carrots all are excellent fiber sources.

Healthy Fats

Not all fats are the enemy of healthy skin---healthy fats can help the skin to retain moisture and boost cell turnover. Foods that contain healthy fats include avocados, walnuts, low-fat milk, olive oil (especially extra virgin olive oil), cheese made with skim milk and almond butter. These fats are known as monounsaturated fats, which is named for their amino acid makeup. In addition to skin-boosting benefits, monounsaturated fats are also associated with a reduced risk for heart disease.


Low-fat milk and milk-based products, such as yogurt, low-fat cheeses, reduced-fat sour cream and ice cream, also are considered acne-fighting foods. Milk contains large amounts of vitamin D, which helps to give the skin elasticity and reduce irritation by keeping the skin moist and soft. The result is fewer breakouts.
