Foods That Cause Vasoconstriction

Foods That Cause Vasoconstriction

Overview

When the muscles in the walls of veins and arteries contract, it is referred to as vasoconstriction, which is typically an undesirable event that happens as a result of medications or for psychological reasons. The condition can have mild to severe symptoms, which can be made worse by the foods you choose to eat.

Caffeine

The effects of caffeine on blood pressure and blood vessel constriction are unclear. However, it is well-known that caffeine is a stimulant that excites the central nervous system when ingested. An article published in the "Journal of Applied Physiology" illustrated that when your body is at rest, caffeine can raise your blood pressure and cause blood vessels to contract.

Alcohol

Alcohol's excitatory effect on the central nervous system depends on how much you consume. Researchers at the University of Iowa's Medical School have concluded that short-term alcohol use can cause a drop in blood pressure. However, more than moderate consumption of alcohol can increase blood pressure beyond healthy levels.

Sodium

A diet rich in sodium can cause your blood pressure to spike to hypertensive levels. This is because too much sodium can cause the concentration of salt in your blood to become too high. High salt concentration in the blood raises the renal solute load and causes the constriction of both kidneys and bladder, according to an article published in the November 2001 issue of the "Journal of the American Society of Nephrology."

Monosodium Glutamate

Foods rich in monosodium glutamate are often the cause of headaches. When you eat high amounts of foods seasoned with monosodium glutamate, the walls of your arteries contract in response. Many packaged foods are high in MSG, as are some foods found in fast food restaurants. Preservatives such as sodium and calcium caseinate, yeast extract and hydrolyzed proteins tend to be high in monosodium glutamate as well.
