Prevent a slow moving colon by incorporating sufficient amounts of fiber into your diet. There are two different types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. According to MedlinePlus, soluble fiber attracts water and slows down digestion. Insoluble fiber bulks stool and allows it to move more quickly through the colon. U.S. News Health states insoluble fiber may also help provide a feeling of fullness. Fiber is found in plant products like whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes. Insoluble fiber is highest in whole wheat, apple skins, and some cabbage family vegetables.

Whole Wheat

Whole wheat is found in whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat cereal and wheat bran. If you are not already consuming these products, substitute refined white grains for whole wheat foods. This switch could help move things along in the colon. Whole grains are also better for overall health because they contain more vitamins, minerals and healthy fats than refined grains.

Vegetables

All vegetables contain some fiber, whether it's soluble, insoluble or a combination of both. Some vegetables are particularly high in insoluble fiber including carrots, Brussels's sprouts, turnips, cabbage, beets, and cauliflower. The USDA recommends at least three servings of vegetables each day. Vary vegetables to ensure different nutrients are consumed. Remember, if you are not already consuming high amounts of high fiber vegetables, increase servings gradually. Gastrointestinal discomfort can result if fiber is increased too rapidly.

Apples

Apples contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. Apple pulp, the inner portion, contains soluble fiber. Apple skins have high amounts of insoluble fiber. When eating apples, do not peel the skin off, you will throw away the colon flowing portion. The USDA recommends at least two servings of fruit each day. Apples are the perfect traveling snack because they cause no mess and fill you up.
