Your mouth serves as a home for several bacterial species, that live on both the soft tissues of the mouth -- such as your gums and tongue -- and the hard tissues -- your teeth. One byproduct of the bacteria in your mouth is the development of plaque on your teeth, which forms due to bacterial colonization on the surface of the tooth. Without adequate dental hygiene, plaque left on your teeth can irritate your gums, as well as lead to tooth decay and dental cavities. Consuming certain foods can facilitate the formation of dental plaque and potentially prove harmful to your oral health.

Sweet Drinks

One potential cause of plaque is sweet drinks, due to the sugar content of these drinks, which serves as food for the bacteria that make up dental plaque. Among the worst drinks for your teeth are those that contain added sugar, including fruit juice cocktails, sugary energy drinks and many drinks. Drinks with added sugar often contain table salt, or sucrose, the preferred food of the bacteria that form dental plaque, according to Colorado State University. To help avoid plaque formation, rinse your mouth with water after drinking sweet drinks, and try to limit your consumption of beverages that contain added sugar.

Sweets

Another cause of dental plaque are sweet foods, including baked goods, chocolate and candy. Like sugary drinks, sweets often provide the bacteria in your mouth with a rich source of sucrose. As a result, eating sugary foods allows for further bacterial growth, which can lead to plaque deposits on your teeth. In addition, small particles of foods may become wedged between your teeth, allowing bacteria to colonize within the small crevices between each tooth and under the gumline, eventually causing gum disease. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends eating sugar-containing foods as part of meals, and to reduce the frequency at which you eat sugary foods, to help prevent plaque formation and gum disease.

Complex Carbohydrates

Eating complex carbohydrates -- such as starchy pastas, breads and potatoes, may also contribute to plaque formation. Like solid sweet foods, particles of starchy foods can become lodged in between your teeth as you chew. Over time, the starch within the food is slowly broken down into simpler sugars, which then serve as fuel for plaque-causing bacteria. Colorado State University recommends eating starchy foods along with fresh fruits and vegetables, meats or other high-fiber foods to help flush starchy food particles from between your teeth and prevent plaque accumulation.
