FD&C yellow No. 5 is common in sodas, candy, ice cream and other processed foods. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that all foods that include FD&C yellow No. 5 must report it on the label with the other ingredients. This additive may be more likely than others to cause or worsen hyperactivity. The other additives may not be listed clearly. Avoid brightly colored processed foods such as frosting, hard candy and gelatin desserts to decrease your child's chance of consuming additives.

Caffeinated Beverages

Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, cola and hot chocolate. You should also avoid feeding your child chocolate due to the caffeine content. Caffeine acts as a stimulant in your body and causes your heart to beat rapidly and may increase blood pressure. The stimulating effects may cause your child to stay up late or wake up frequently throughout the night. If your child is fatigued due to lack of sleep, his ADHD symptoms may worsen, reports MayoClinic.com. Replace your child's cola with a caffeine-free lemon-lime soda or 100 percent fruit juice.

Refined Grains

Foods with refined grains are processed quickly in your body. Refined grain foods provide carbs that enter your bloodstream quickly and may cause a sudden spike in your blood sugar levels, reports MedlinePlus.com. Feeding your child refined carbohydrates may worsen her hyperactivity symptoms due to the sudden surge of blood sugar. Avoid refined grain foods such as white bread, white pasta and instant oatmeal.
