Foods That Cause Frequent Urination Foods That Cause Frequent Urination

Frequent urination is the sudden, strong urge to urinate that occurs more often than usual. Some individuals may get up several times at night to use the bathroom. This condition is known as nocturia. Apart from conditions, such as diabetes, prostate problems and urinary tract infections, certain foods and fluids also promote frequent urination.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a bitter substance found in coffee, tea, sodas and chocolates that can stimulate the central nervous system. Although, two to four cups of coffee per day may be safe for most people, an article published on the website of Vanderbilt University states that excessive amounts of caffeine can increase the blood flow to the kidneys and weaken the detrusor muscles in the bladder causing increased urination. The amount of caffeine that leads to these affects vary depending upon the individual and men, according to MayoClinic.com, are more sensitive to caffeine than women.

Acidic Foods

MayoClinic.com also recommends that patients with urinary incontinence should avoid acidic fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, lemons, limes and tomatoes and their juices to prevent aggravation of the condition. Certain spicy foods, carbonated drinks and artificial sweeteners may also irritate the bladder and lead to leakage of the urine from it. The actual cause of this bladder irritation is unknown. The foods responsible for increased urination also vary in different individuals. It is, therefore, best to talk to a doctor to identify the actual cause of the condition before avoiding these foods.

Alcohol

Alcohol is one of the oldest drugs known to mankind and is made from fermented grains, fruit juices or honey. The effect of alcohol on an individual, however, depends upon his age, gender, medications and other pre-existing conditions. The Addiction Science Research and Education Center states that alcohol influences the anti-diuretic hormones produced by the pituitary gland and thus increases the urine volume. One of two drinks per day may not harmful to most individuals. Chronic, excessive or binge drinking may, however, also cause kidney damage and may affect urination.
