Colic is a common condition in which a baby cries or screams for no apparent reason and over an extended period of time. Also known as infant colic and three month colic, the condition usually appears in the first few weeks of a baby's life, but typically disappears between three and four months. Often colic is caused by a food eaten by the mother, which then passes to the baby through breastfeeding. In bottle-fed babies, colic may be caused by a specific food allergy -- in these cases a hypoallergenic formula may help to reduce or eliminate the colic symptoms.

Milk

The most common dietary cause of colic is cow's milk, according to Dr. Harvey Kelp's Colic Help website. Dr. Kelp indicates this is due to the baby's immature digestive tract not being able to process milk from cows which has been passed through the mother's breast milk. The proteins in cow's milk, if they are not properly digested by the baby, can cause a buildup of intestinal gas which leads to colic pain and crying. If you choose to eliminate cow's milk from your diet while breastfeeding, bear in mind that there are many products containing milk. Milk products included in other foods may be labeled as casein, lactalbumin, sodium caseinate, whey or lactoglobulin. Prepared foods containing milk proteins include white or milk chocolate, salami, sausage and hot dog products, waffles, cakes, cookies and pancakes, and of course butter and cheese. Foods labeled as kosher are free of milk products.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables are known to increase the incidence of colic in some babies when passed through breast milk. Examples of cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, garden cress, kale, horseradish, mustard greens, radishes, swiss chard, turnips, turnip greens, cauliflower, collard greens and cabbage.

Miscellaneous

Other foods have been reported as colic-causing for individual babies, according to Dr. Harvey Kelp. Some mothers report an increase in a baby's colic and crying after the mother has eaten onion, eggs, peanuts, citrus fruit, products containing wheat, corn or soy, caffeine, artificial sweeteners spicy food, tomatoes and strawberries. Again, the colic-causing properties of these foods are most likely due to the fact they are difficult for the infant to digest.
