Foods That Cause Belching

Foods That Cause Belching Foods That Cause Belching

Belching is a natural body reaction to excess gas inside the stomach. When gas builds up, the esophagus will relax, allowing the extra gas to escape through the mouth. This causes the familiar sound you know as a belch. Certain foods can cause excess gas to build up in the stomach, causing belching to occur. If belching has become more often than normal or isn't caused from eating these foods, see your doctor for advice.

Carbonated Drinks

Carbonated drinks include any type of drink that is fizzy. Drinking these soft drinks can bring an excess amount of gas into the stomach. Carbonated drinks are notorious for making people belch, because your stomach wasn't designed to hold so much air at one time. Instead of reaching for a soda each time you are thirsty, pour a glass of milk or draw a glass of water. Not only are they healthier choices, they will keep excess gas at bay.

Chewing Gum

You may not realize chewing gum can cause you to belch. When you are chewing gum, you tend to relax your throat and swallow more air. This will cause air to build up in the stomach and belching to result. If you have a significant problem with belching, avoid chewing gum. Hard candies can also have the same effect as chewing gum.

Spicy Foods

Spicy foods are notorious for causing belching. The Health Hype website states that the reason for this is because the spice in the food irritates the hiatus, which is the opening located at the top of the stomach, leading into the esophagus. The hiatus opens to allow gas to escape, and when it is irritated, it can do so more than is needed.

Beer

Burping isn't only caused by swallowing excess air. The website Bottom Line Secrets states that burping is a combination of swallowing too much air, gas being released from the foods you eat and the fermentation of the foods you ate. Beer is the perfect combination of all these factors. It is carbonated, fermented and releases gas in your stomach as well. Beer should only be consumed in moderation. If burping is a problem, avoid it altogether.
