Food allergies can be triggered by certain foods in infants, children and adults. The MayoClinic.com explains that a food allergy causes the immune system to react to a specific food substance as if it is harmful to the body. This releases antibodies against that food that remain in the body and signal an attack if the food allergen is eaten again. Symptoms of foods allergies vary in severity and type and include stomach and digestive upset, skin rashes and inflammation, a runny nose and respiratory difficulties. A doctor can diagnose a food allergy with blood or skin prick tests or by eliminating certain foods from the diet.

Milk, Eggs and Fish

Milk is a common food allergen for babies and children and is often the first one to be discovered when babies are fed milk for the first time. The Merck Manual advises that milk, eggs, fish and shellfish such as mussels, crabs and shrimp are the most common food allergy triggers in children and they can also occur and persist in adults. These food allergies can cause digestive problems, skin rashes and breathing difficulties in infants and children.

Nuts and Soybeans

Allergies to nuts such as peanuts are common in children and can cause potentially serious reactions, such as swelling of the face, mouth, throat and respiratory passageways and anaphylactic shock. The Merck Manual lists other nut allergies such as tree nuts including walnuts, pecans and cashews. Soybeans, soy milk and other soy products are also common food allergens.

Grains and Cereals

The health site MedicalNewsToday.com notes that a number of grains and cereals are reported to cause allergic reactions in both children and adults. These include rice, wheat, barley, rye, oats and maize or corn. Adults are most commonly allergic to wheat and wheat products.
