Your gallbladder is an organ that is not vital to your survival, but is one that can cause you a great deal of pain and discomfort if gallbladder disease strikes. This disease begins with gallstones, hard particles in the organ that approximately 1 million Americans develop each year, according to Chiff.com. Changing your diet may help reduce your symptoms or prevent them from becoming worse.

The Gallbladder

Your gallbladder sits under your liver on the right side of your abdomen. Your liver produces bile, a liquid that helps digest fats. Your gallbladder serves to store bile until it's needed. Some people develop gallstones, hard particles that form from substances in the bile such as cholesterol, bile salts and bilirubin, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center. Many people have gallstones and do not realize it. When the stones become too large, pain ensues.

Gallbladder Disease

Your gallbladder has ducts through which bile flows from your liver to your intestines. If gallstones block one or more of these ducts, inflammation of your gallbladder occurs. This is gallbladder disease, and one sign of this condition is a gallbladder attack. Symptoms include pain primarily on the upper right side of your abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. An inability to tolerate fatty foods and pain following meals are additional signs.

Significance of Diet

Frank W. Jackson, M.D., states that in a healthy diet, fats should account for no more than 30 percent of your total daily calories. However, certain conditions, such as gallbladder disease, make it difficult for your body to tolerate that much. Additionally, cholesterol is the primary cause of gallstone formation. Changing your diet to one with low-fat choices may help prevent complications from gallbladder disease, and prevent the frequency of gallbladder attacks.

Food to Avoid

Fried and fatty foods are a given; these can aggravate an already inflamed gallbladder. Red meat may do the same, as it is riddled with fat. If you must eat red meat, opt for the lean cuts. Jackson suggests avoiding whole milk and whole milk products, including cream, sour cream and dairy creamer. Any breads containing eggs; as well as other baked goods such as biscuits, muffins and pastries; and snack chips are full of fat and oil. All varieties of vegetables are fine unless you fry them or top them with cheese or butter. Avoid lunch meat that is less than 95 percent fat-free, and any canned meat in oil. Eliminate cream soups or soups made with meat fat or stock, along with ice cream and baked goods.
