Hormonal acne is characterized by sore, inflamed pimples, usually affecting the face, neck and back. During puberty, pregnancy and certain times in the menstrual cycle, the skin may produce excess oil, which blocks skin follicles and causes pimples. Hormonal acne usually affects women and is sometimes treated with low-dose birth control or drugs blocking androgen hormone action. Some herbs and foods may help alleviate this skin condition, although the University of Maryland Medical Center notes no scientific evidence proves this.

Guggul

The herb guggul, also known as Commiphora mukul, may help hormonal acne sufferers by regulating levels of the hormone estrogen, notes the UMMC website. Guggul has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years for a variety of disorders, including arthritis and obesity. According to the UMMC website, 500 mg of guggul may be taken twice daily to treat acne and may be as effective as the antibiotic tetracycline. Do not take this herb if you or anyone in your family has a history of hormone-related cancers or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Guggul may interact with birth-control pills and anticoagulant drugs.

Tea Tree

Tea tree oil may help lessen the severity of hormonal acne by reducing inflammation and killing bacteria, notes the UMMC website. This oil is made from the leaves of the tea tree native to the southeast coast of Australia. According to MedlinePlus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, it may be as effective as 5 percent benzoyl peroxide in cases of mild to moderate acne. Although tea tree oil is usually safe for most people, it may a cause a stinging or burning sensation on the skin. Tea tree oil is intended for topical use only. Never take it as an oral treatment.

Foods

Although some foods such as chocolate and nuts are believed to make acne worse, the UMMC website notes that no scientific evidence shows this. However, the website states that keeping your blood sugar levels stable by eating foods that have a low glycemic index may help control your acne. Such foods include basmati or doongara rice, fruits and vegetables, pasta, noodles and whole-grain bread.
