Foods and Drinks That Cause Acne
Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Its exact cause is a mystery but there are four key players, according to the Academy of Dermatology website: excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. Acne has not been found to be caused specifically by foods and drinks, but certain foods and drinks may trigger or aggravate acne in some people. If this is the case, it is best to avoid them.
Caffeine
While caffeine may help those who need a quick pick-me-up during the day, it can also increase hormone production and lead to an acne breakout. Avoid coffee, colas, chocolate, and tea.
Refined Sugars and Carbohydrates
The healthy skincare website states that white breads, pastas, flour, and anything containing refined sugars, such as cake, doughnuts, candy and cookies should be avoided because they can cause a surge in insulin production, which in turn can increase hormone levels and lead to an acne breakout.
Animal Protein
With the use of hormones in dairy products to increase milk production, some people have a difficult time digesting animal proteins found in milk, cheese, and red meats. Because these foods are not digested properly, the waste products resulting from them linger in the body and are then released through the skin, resulting in a breakout. The hormones in these foods can also raise the hormone levels in the body, thus causing acne.
Processed Foods
Processed foods can be quicker and easier to cook for a family on a tight budget, but they contain toxins, such as additives, preservatives and synthetic colors. These toxins can overload the liver and lead to acne break-out.
Alcohol
Alcohol, such as beer, wine and vodka, can increase testosterone in the body, leading to an acne break-out.
Fats
Too much trans and saturated fats are not good for a person's overall health and well-being and they may also lead to acne in some people and should be avoided.
