Acid reflux occurs when acids from your stomach bubble up through a valve into your esophagus. This valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter, seals off the lower end of your esophagus so that foods can pass down into the stomach but not back up into the esophagus. The lining of your esophagus can become irritated by bile and other digestive juices, so a weakening of the lower esophageal sphincter can lead to the burning sensation known as heartburn. Acid reflux is the term used to describe when digestive juices escape upward through a lax esophageal sphincter. Certain foods, in combination with certain body postures, are known to trigger acid reflux.

Problem Beverages

The American Dietetic Association warns that drinks containing caffeine are a known trigger for symptoms of acid reflux, so you'll want to avoid coffee and teas that contain caffeine. Unfortunately, decaffeinated types of coffee may also cause acid reflux, due to high acid content. Herbal teas, with the exception of mint teas, are a suitable option for most people.

Alcohol is also a culprit in causing reflux, as are acidic beverages such as citrus juices or tomato juice. Other drinks that may aggravate your acid reflux symptoms include carbonated beverages, so say goodbye to soda pop. Whole milk may aggravate acid reflux due to its high fat content, and chocolate milk -- whether whole or skim -- may cause problems.

Fatty Meats

Fats are heavy and hard to digest, so they sit in your stomach for a long time and increase pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, according to the University of Illinois McKinley Health Center. As a result, fats are often implicated in cases of acid reflux. You should decrease your consumption of fatty meats such as bacon, hot dogs and sausage, as well as any meat that is fried, including fish or poultry. Lean meats, such as grilled or broiled fish and chicken, are far better options when you're seeking relief from acid reflux.

Acidic Produce

Most fruits and vegetables should not cause problems for acid reflux sufferers, and they are a highly nutritious choice in any diet. However, a few exceptions exist. Citrus fruits and tomatoes contain high acidic levels and should be avoided. Garlic and onions might cause problems for some people as well, according to the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Condiments

Condiments commonly added to enhance food flavors have the unfortunate consequence of exacerbating acid reflux. MayoClinic.com warns that ketchup, mustard, black pepper and vinegar are frequent triggers of this condition.
