People with eczema or atopic dermatitis experience intense, itchy rashes that become scaly, weepy or fluid-filled over time. According to a position paper by Dr. Thomas Werfel in the October 2004 issue of "Current Opinions in Allergy and Clinical Immunology," more than 50 percent of children with eczema suffer because of food allergies, most notably to milk and eggs, while adults with eczema tend to react to pollen-associated food.

Milk

Children suffering from eczema may develop eczema flare-ups when they eat milk products such as cream, yogurt, cheese, custards, cakes and other baked goods. Parents also need to watch out for foods containing whey, casein, artificial flavors for cheese and butter, and hydrosolate, notes MayoClinic.com, since these ingredients indicate the presence of milk. Foods that normally do not contain milk can also trigger eczema if they are processed in the same facility as other milk products, or if they contain traces of milk contaminated from the same processing facility.

Eggs

Egg white is the major allergy-causing protein in eggs, but some children will react to yolk as well. Examples of common egg-containing foods include breads baked with a shiny glaze, French toast, muffins and pancakes, root beer, eggnog, cakes and other pastries. Someone with eczema must also watch out for salad dressings and sauces, mayonnaise, noodles and pasta. Foods labeled with "eggs in ingredients" and "processed in facility with egg" also provide warnings for people with eczema to avoid such triggers, notes KidsHealth.org from the Nemours Foundation.

Pollen-Related Foods

According to Dr. Werfel, some adults with eczema will react to fruits and vegetables that have proteins identical to those found in birch pollen. They may experience more severe eczema rash 24 hours after eating apple, hazelnut, carrot or celery. According to Dr. Werfel, studies found that some children who clearly did not have food allergies but have eczema developed the rash immediately upon eating pollen-related fruits and vegetables.
