Acne is skin condition that causes blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and pimples. It is caused by bacteria buildup, dead skin cells and dried oil clogging skin pores, reports the MayoClinic.com. Just as hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen, can play a role in skin growth and oil production, your diet can influence acne.

Meat and Dairy

Milk is a chemically processed food that contains antibiotics and hormones that are given to cows. These antibiotics and artificial hormones can trigger acne and pimple breakouts. Milk also contains traces of iodine, commonly found in cow feed, which can contribute to acne problems for some milk drinkers. According to a 2008 article published in the "Clinics in Dermatology" by Dr. William Danby, increased oil production and subsequent acne may be caused by milk hormone ingredients such as 5-alpha-pregnanedione, 5-alpha-androstanedione and dihydrotestosterone. Meats such as beef and pork also contain DHT, which can possibly trigger acne and pimples.

Seafood and Spinach

Seafood, such as crab, shrimp, crawfish, lobster and oysters, and spinach contain substantial amounts of iodine, which can cause acne and pimples, reports Science Daily. Iodine is the only dietary component scientifically proven to trigger acne breakouts in individuals who are sensitivity to it, says Harvey Arbesman, a University at Buffalo dermatologist.

Processed Foods

Processed foods, such as packaged chips and cookies, microwave dinners, frozen pizzas and cold cuts, can include additives and preservatives that can prove toxic if consumed regularly, reports PlanetGreen.com. The iodine in iodized salt may also trigger acne and pimple outbreaks. When your liver has to regularly break down these toxins, it may not function properly, which can acne outbreaks from leftover toxins in your body.

Refined Sugar

Foods that contain high amounts of refined sugar can increase your insulin and testosterone levels, which can promote acne and pimple outbreaks, notes PlanetGreen.com. Foods high in sugar include soda, white potatoes and bread, desserts, candies and ice cream. If you suffer from acne or pimples, consume a low-glycemic diet or one that is low in sugar.
