The urinary system helps the body to eliminate waste and maintain salt and water balances. It is made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, usually impact the lower parts of the urinary system such as the urethra and bladder, but can become more serious if they move up into the kidneys. According to the Mayo Clinic, the bacteria Escherichia coli, which typically lives in the gastrointestinal tract, gets into the bladder or urethra, causing the infection. Some foods can contribute to an infection-inducing environment, however.

Caffeine Products

Coffee and other foods and beverages high in caffeine can cause the body to become dehydrated. This can irritate your urinary tract, increasing your risk of a urinary tract infection by preventing the natural flushing of fluids through the body, according to Dr. Andrew Weil. Drinking the right fluids causes you to urinate more frequently, helping to flush the urinary tract of any bacteria.

Sugars

It is advised to avoid all forms of sugar to prevent urinary tract infections, especially if you have chronic infection, according to Remedy-Bladder-Infection.com. Sugar aids in the rapid production of bacteria, which promotes infections. Avoid any concentrated sweets including table sugar, honey and syrups. Deserts, baked goods and soda are also obvious sources of sugar to be avoided. Some not-so-obvious sources are sweet fruits and fruit juices, which can contain high concentrations of natural sugars.

Alcohol

Alcohol has a dehydrating effect on the body no matter how many times you run to the restroom during the evening. When you wake the next morning with a headache and muscle cramps, it's because your body is lacking hydration. Most alcoholic beverages contain carbohydrates, which break down in the body as sugar, further speeding up the production of bacteria, according to Dr. Weil. Drinking can aggravate an existing urinary tract infection.

Spicy Foods

Many resources and doctors recommend avoiding spicy foods while suffering from a urinary tract infection as it can irritate it further, and large amounts of spicy foods can even cause infections. Foods high in spice can dehydrate the body by causing it to overheat and sweat. Avoid foods containing jalapenos, habaneros and other spicy peppers.
