Food Allergies That Cause Itchy Skin

Sometimes what people put into their mouths can show up on their skin. When people eat foods that trigger allergic reactions in their bodies, they may suffer itchy skin rashes as a result. A variety of food allergies can cause itchy skin problems, such as hives or eczema. Identifying specific types of food allergies can help people avoid itchy skin rashes by avoiding certain kinds of food.

Nuts

People who are allergic to nuts may experience itchy skin after eating even just a small amount of them, cautions the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, and those who are allergic to one type of nut may also be allergic to other types because all members of the nut food group can trigger allergic reactions in the body together. But among people who are allergic to just one type of nut, the most common allergies they have are to peanuts and tree nuts, the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology says. Most people with nut allergies deal with those allergies for their entire lifetimes, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Seafood

Seafood allergies can also cause itchy skin --- not just after people eat seafood, but also when they inhale steam from seafood boiling or simmering while cooking, the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology reports. Shellfish is the type of seafood that most often triggers allergies that affect the skin, says the National Institutes of Health. Within the shellfish group, crustaceans such as lobster, crab and shrimp are more likely to cause allergic reactions than molluscan shellfish that include scallops, oysters and clams, the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology states.

Milk

A milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies among children, says the National Institutes of Health, and it can cause itchy skin as well as other food allergies. The National Institutes of Health reports that most children who suffer from a milk allergy outgrow the allergy by age 5 if they avoid milk when they're younger than 5 years old, and most adults aren't allergic to milk. Many adults may suffer from lactose intolerance --- a condition caused by difficulty digesting milk --- but that disorder doesn't cause itchy skin, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Wheat

Another common allergy among children that causes itchy skin is an allergy to wheat, which is found in foods such as bread and pasta, says the National Institutes of Health. Not nearly as many adults are allergic to wheat, and children who are usually outgrow the allergy by the time they're 5 years old as long as they avoid wheat when they're younger than that age, the National Institutes of Health reports.
