Acne problems happen when a natural oil known as sebum mixes with dead skin cells in your hair follicles, according to the Mayo Clinic. If the plug of oil and dead cells causes a follicle to inflame or if bacteria enters and causes an infection, a pimple erupts. No magical pill or remedy will cause your pimples to disappear. The fastest way to get clear skin is to follow some basic steps that help prevent future breakouts.

Step 1

Avoid putting your hands on your face. Since your hands can spread bacteria and aggravate your acne, wash them throughout the day, particularly when you're about to apply a cream or makeup, says the Nemours Foundation. Also, keep your hands busy or cover them with gloves at times when you know might rest your chin on them or when you'll be tempted to pick at pimples.

Step 2

Cleanse your face gently with warm water and a gentle soap especially made for acne-prone skin, says the Nemours Foundation. Prevent irritation by using a light, circular motion with your hands rather than using a wash cloth. Wash no more than twice a day; more than that could aggravate your skin and strip all of the oil from your face. In time, that may cause your skin to produce more than enough oil in an attempt to fix the problem.

Step 3

Spread on an over-the-counter acne lotion. A product that mentions either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as its active ingredient should help dry out excess oil and encourage peeling, says the Mayo Clinic. Don't use more than the bottle suggests or else you risk irritating your delicate facial skin. Since many products recommend twice-daily applications, an easy way to follow that direction is to use the lotion right after you wash your face.

Step 4

Use only make-up labeled "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic," as it is formulated to not clog pores, says the American Academy of Dermatology. Look for similar labels on products such as sunscreen and hair gel if you're planning to use them on or near your face. Continue to gently cleanse your face each night regardless of what type of cosmetics or toiletries you use on your skin. Phrases a non-greasy product might use on its label include "won't clog pores" and "oil-free."

Step 5

Apply sunscreen with a rating of SPF-15 or higher to your face before you go outside. Allow 30 minutes to absorb and, in the meantime, put on long sleeves, pants and a hat that shields your face from the sun's rays, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Getting a tan can cause your skin to produce more oil and make your acne worse, according to the Nemours Foundation. Not only that, too much sun exposure can cause other unwanted marks such as age spots and freckles and could potentially lead to skin cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 6

Visit your dermatologist for extra help. She may mention prescription creams or gels if your acne is mild, but she might also recommend stronger treatments such as oral antibiotics or a combination of antibiotics and cream if your skin needs extra help. Other treatments she might mention are birth control pills if you're a female or corticosteroid injections if you have large and painful lesions.
