Pimples appear at the most inconvenient times--right before a big date, for instance, or the night before an important meeting. If you've just broken out, and you have no acne medicine, don't despair. Several home remedies can work quickly on that breakout, helping you look fabulous for your big event.

Aloe Vera

If you have a bottle of aloe vera from your last sunburn or even an aloe plant in your house, you're in luck. Dabbing a bit of aloe on the acne soothes the skin and also acts as a mild anti-inflammatory to help reduce the size and redness of the bump. But the University of Maryland Medical Center warns against applying aloe to an open wound, so avoid putting it on a pimple you've picked or popped.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant used for a variety of skin conditions. Tea tree oil comes in a 5 percent gel that can be applied to acne to reduce swelling and inflammation. The Mayo Clinic reports that tea tree oil has purported antiseptic properties and is used to treat infections.

Ice

Applying an ice cube to the skin can help reduce the inflammation of a pimple. Place an ice cube on the spot for about 60 seconds after washing your face to make the spot less noticeable.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal cleans pores by absorbing oil and exfoliating the skin. Tne GrannyMed website suggests mixing cooked plain oatmeal with a quarter cup of honey and applying it to the face for 10 to 20 minutes--after the oatmeal has cooled, of course. The honey makes the oatmeal stickier, so it will stay on your face and also tones the skin.

Peppermint

Peppermint contains menthol, a natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It has a soothing and numbing effect, making it a common treatment for skin irritations, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. Apply crushed mint leaves and juice. Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes, and rinse with cold water, repeating as often as necessary.
