Facts on Treating Blackheads

1. Blackhead Treatment Starts With Good Skin Care

Blackheads form when your skin's natural oils build up and block your pores. The build up makes its way to the surface of the skin and appears as small black dots. Blackheads appear mostly on the t-zone of the face because these areas contain the most oil glands. If you have naturally oily skin, you're more susceptible to blackhead outbreaks. To prevent and treat blackheads, start a good skin care regimen. Wash your face with a cleanser in the morning and evening each day. Try the cleanser by Cetaphil which works on all skin types.

2. Treat Blackheads Systematically

Many people choose to get rid of blackheads by investing in a packaged system of skin care products. When used together, these products can keep your face free of acne and blackheads. One of the best selling skin care sets is Proactiv.

3. Go to the Trouble Spot

Blackhead sufferers have several options when it comes to treatment methods. Instead of a skin care system, apply acne and blemish medication directly to the trouble spots. Acne medications that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help dry up the blackhead and allow it to flake away. You can also use acne fighting creams or pads from either Noxzema or Oxy to help clear up the blackheads.

4. Don't Pop, Exfoliate

If you have a blackhead, you should not attempt to remove it by squeezing it out with your fingers. This can actually worsen your complexion and cause acne scarring. Additionally, if the blackhead area is infected, you can spread the infection to other areas of the skin. Instead, exfoliate as a way to get rid of blackheads. Soften the skin first with a warm washcloth. Then use an exfoliating wash to scrub the area. Dove makes an exfoliating face cleanser that's gentle on the skin. The cleanser's exfoliating properties should make the blackhead flake off on its own.

5. Instant Removal With Pore Strips

Several beauty supply companies manufacture pore strips to help extract stubborn blackheads. To use the strips, first wash your face and then stick the strip to the wet nose or other affected area. After the strip dries to the skin, you peel it away. The blackheads are extracted from the area. Brands to try include Biore, Elizabeth Arden and Earth Therapeutics. However, keep in mind that to prevent future breakouts, you should take care of your skin by regularly washing and toning.
