1. The Pimple Culprit

Pimples are very common and almost everyone has gotten them. Pimples are caused by oil that blocks the skin's pores. The blockage causes an inflammation that gives the skin the red bumpy appearance of a pimple. A whitehead on a pimple is caused by the formation of bacteria or pus that travels to the inflammation. It does not appear that eating certain foods or being under stress causes pimples as some people believe.

2. Not Just for Teenagers

Although they are a common occurrence in the teen years, adolescents are not the only ones who develop pimples. Most adults get pimples to some degree on occasion. Women in particular may develop pimples in their thirties or forties. It is believed fluctuations in hormones such as at puberty, pregnancy or during a women's menstrual cycle can cause pimples by stimulating the oil glands.

3. Don't Pop That Pimple

You may be tempted to pop your pimple and think that popping it will help get rid of it faster, but hold off on the zit zapping. Popping a pimple can actually damage the skin and spread an infection especially if the pimple is still under the skin. It may also cause a scar to develop. A better way to speed up the popping process is to apply a warm compress to the pimple several times a day.

4. Products to Try

Many at home pimple products are available. Use a product that contains five percent benzoyl peroxide. If that does not work or seems to irritate your skin try a product containing salicylic acid. Apply the pimple cream once or twice a day. If pimples become severe it may be necessary to see a dermatologist who can prescribe an ache treatment.

5. Pimple Prevention to Practice

It may not be possible to prevent every pimple from developing but there are some steps to take to keep your skin as clear as possible. Wash your face with an oil free antibacterial facial wash daily. Avoid rubbing too hard which can irritate the skin. Don't go overboard with cleaning your skin several times a day. Some skin oil is needed to prevent dryness. Very dry skin can lead to other skin problems. Deep cleaning your pores occasionally through a facial or sitting in a steam room may help pores from becoming blocked. Use oil free makeup which is less likely to block pores. Drink a lot of water to help your skin stay well hydrated and healthy.
