Blackheads are caused by oils, bacteria and dead skin cells becoming clogged inside your pores. It can be more difficult to eliminate blackheads than acne pustules because the impurities can remain inside the pores without ever coming to a head. Luckily, there are a few facial products that can help flush out blackheads and prevent them from recurring.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a non-pore clogging oil that you can use to flush out blackheads from the pores. You can purchase castor oil from health food stores, natural foods markets or online merchants. Buy only an organic castor oil, which will be free of pesticides and herbicides, which can potentially irritate the skin. Apply castor oil to the skin with the fingers, and gently massage in for three to five minutes. Place a hot washcloth or towel onto the skin to allow the pores to open, then use it to wipe off the oils when the cloth or towel cools down. You can use castor oil on blackheads twice a day.

Retinoids

Retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A, are only available by prescription, and are used on the skin to dry up acne breakouts and increase skin cell turnover. When the skin cells turn over more quickly, it allows the dead skin cells to be sloughed off more quickly while encouraging the development of new skin cells. This turnover prevents the pores from becoming clogged. There are different strengths of retinoid cream available. Check with a dermatologist to find out which strength of retinoid cream is right for your skin type and severity of breakouts. Avoid applying retinoid cream around the delicate skin near the eyes, which can become irritated easily.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid helps regulate the production of skin cells, preventing the pores from becoming clogged. Salicylic acid is usually added to gels or creams, which you can buy in varying strengths at any grocery or drug store. You can also find certain types of makeup, such as concealers or facial powders that contain small amounts of salicylic acid. You can use these cosmetics on acne-prone skin without clogging the pores. Salicylic acid does not cause side effects on the skin like other acne products can, making it an effective alternative for people with sensitive skin. Apply salicylic acid two to three times a day to treat blackheads and whiteheads. Keep salicylic acid away from the delicate eye area.
