In most cases, a teenager will get a pimple on his face at some point, and even adults can experience acne into their 20s, 30s and beyond. Some people believe that avoiding foods like pizza, chocolate and greasy foods can prevent acne, and that eating these foods can cause breakouts. While eating a healthy diet is good for your skin as well as the rest of your body, many experts assert that food does not cause acne.

Insulin Resistance

The American Academy of Dermatology states that although various studies have at one point or another shown a possible correlation between certain foods and acne, the associations are weak and more research needs to be done. One misconception is that the common American diet, which may cause insulin resistance in many people, causes acne as a response to this insulin resistance. Since most people with obesity have some insulin resistance, however, and since not all obese people have acne, the AAD states that this link may or may not exist. A low-glycemic diet may help some people with facial acne, but this has not been proven.


There may be an association between milk consumption and acne. Because most commercial milk comes from pregnant cows, one hypothesis is that the pregnancy hormones may cause acne in susceptible individuals. The AAD explains that one study, in which participants were asked to recall what they ate during their high school years, showed a possible connection. One limitation of the study is that some of the participants had graduated from high school nearly a decade earlier, and their memories of what they had been eating during that time period may not have been accurate.

Preventing Acne

If you seem to have a problem with developing facial acne after eating a particular food, it makes sense to try cutting it out of your diet to see if it makes a difference. A more effective way to prevent acne, though, is to practice good hygiene. Wash your face with a mild soap and lukewarm water twice daily. Don't scrub, because this can irritate your skin and cause more acne-causing oil production. Use only products that are marked "non-comedogenic," as these will not clog your pores. Use hair styling products sparingly.

Skin-Friendly Diet

Eating a diet that is full of healthy foods and that contains all of the required vitamins and minerals will help your skin to look healthy, explains KidsHealth. Fill up on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and to keep your skin soft. Do not take supplements to boost your skin health without talking to your physician first.
