The eyes are the windows to the soul, as the poets keep reminding us. As the part responsible for one of our senses--vision--the eyes play a crucial role in our lives. Though relatively small, the eyes are made up of many parts, including the sclera, or the white outer layer; the cornea, which is a clear surface covering the entire eye; the pupil and iris, found under the cornea; the conjuctiva, an outer membrane that covers the sclera and keeps it moist; the lens, located behind the iris, which helps the eyes focus; and the retina, found on the inner--or back--side of the eye, which receives light from the lens, then transmits the visual information to the brain. All of the eye's parts work harmoniously to help us see what's in front of us. The sclera gives the eye its shape and protects it from damage. The cornea also protects the eye, but its main function is to act like a magnifying glass and focus light rays on the retina (the cornea is sensitive to foreign objects and cold temperatures). The pupil is where the light travels through on its way from the lens to the retina at the back of the eye. The iris surrounds the pupil and controls how dilated (open) the pupil gets--in darker conditions, the iris's tiny muscles relax, thereby opening up the pupil to let in more light. Conversely, in bright conditions, the iris's muscles contract and the pupil's light hole constricts. However, the retina is responsible for converting a bunch of light rays into concrete images that our brain can interpret. By converting light rays into nerve impulses, the retina in effect acts as a translator of light into image and gives us one of out most precious human attributes--the gift of sight.
