Your choice of eye cream is independent of your skin type. Oily skin is a condition that develops due to overactive sebaceous glands, meaning they produce more oil than you need, leaving your face looking shiny and prone to acne and breakouts. People with this condition use skin care products that minimize oiliness and congestion. However, the skin around the eyes is thinner, more sensitive and has no sebaceous glands, and therefore, is not oily at all.


While puffiness, wrinkles and "crow's feet" are common complaints about the eye area, according to "The Skin Type Solution: A Revolutionary Guide to Your Best Skin Ever" by Leslie Baumann, people with oily skin are more vulnerable to developing dark circles under the eyes. Free radicals and lack of moisture are the leading causes of aging, especially around the eyes, so eye creams are formulated to moisturize and protect the delicate skin around and under the eye area by stimulating collagen and elastin production.

Eye creams and serums are formulated to fix different needs. But if you are concerned about oily skin, then choose products that are oil-free. Products containing oil increase the likelihood of clogged glands around the eyes that can lead to infections and other ocular problems. Cucumber extract is moisture binding, soothing, anti-inflammatory and excellent for tired, stressed skin. Vitamin A-derived retinols can help to smooth out crow's feet and wrinkles by boosting collagen production in the area. Sun Protection

You must protect your skin from the sun's harmful UVA & UVB rays. But the thin under eye skin can be very sensitive to most sunscreens. Each morning, wash your face with a cleanser containing salicylic acid to decrease acne and clean pores while easing pigmentation problems. Next, avoiding the eye area, apply a face moisturizer containing natural botanicals to reduce pore size, and hyaluronic acid to nourish the skin without leaving it greasy or shiny. Apply eye cream to the area around the eyes and eye lids. Apply sun screen and makeup, if applicable. Each night before bed, wash your face, apply moisturizer and finish with eye cream.


While skin around the eyes is not oily, the wrong product can still clog pores and cause bumps. Keep the skin hydrated by always drinking plenty of water. There are effective alternatives for relieving eye puffiness and dark circles. Place slices of fresh cucumbers over the eyes in the evening. Use a facial gel pack or a chilled glass globe to sooth the skin and stimulate blood circulation. The globes, often called Magic Globes, are made from Pyrex glass and contain an antifreeze solution.
