Enzyme Peel for Acne
Smooth, unblemished skin makes you look young and attractive. It isn't always easy to achieve, however. Acne can mar an otherwise smooth face and severe acne can cause scarring. Enzyme peels remove the top layer of skin, leaving a smoother surface free of most blemishes. Peels leave skin looking smooth and refreshed.
Enzyme peels remove the top layer of skin to improve appearance, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. The enzymes or other chemicals in the peel sloughs off dead skin cells along with the uppermost layer of the epidermis, revealing a new layer of smoother, unblemished skin.
Skin peels help control acne, remove skin blemishes and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, explains the University of Maryland. Deeper peels remove precancerous growths and even skin discolorations. The Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics recommends enzyme peels for all skin types to smoothen skin. The effects of enzyme peels are immediately noticeable.
Enzyme peels contain enzymes found naturally in fruits such as papaya, pineapple, green apples as well as pumpkins and aloe vera. Peels containing alphahydroxy acids, or AHA, also exfoliate but may cause more skin irritation than fruit enzyme peels. Fruit enzyme and AHA peels are most commonly used to treat acne. Stronger peels containing trichloroacetic acid or phenols are generally reserved for more intense treatments and are not used to treat acne, says the University of Maryland.
The enzyme peel is applied in a thin layer to your face with a circular motion, describes SkinPeel4U. The peel sloughs off dead skin cells and separates the top layer of skin from the deeper layers, explains the University of Maryland. The lower layer of skin appears smoother than the older, outer layer and is free of most blemishes.
Enzyme peels are more gentle than chemical peels, says SkinPeel4U, but all peels may irritate the skin. Skin peels may cause stinging and may leave your skin temporarily reddened, notes the University of Maryland. Your skin may also be dry or flaky after a peel. Enzyme peels may temporarily change skin color, and in some cases the color change may be permanent. People susceptible to cold sores may experience an outbreak after a skin peel. Skin peels can scar the skin but these scars can be removed with additional peels, says the University of Maryland.
