Effectiveness of Duac CS for Acne
Many teens, and even some adults, have tried benzoyl peroxide-based treatments to cure their acne. The American Academy of Dermatology calls it "the mainstay" of acne treatment. But in some cases of acne, benzoyl peroxide needs a little help. The prescription treatment Duac CS combines benzoyl peroxide with an antibiotic, and also includes a non-medicated cleanser that helps with acne treatment.
Causes of Acne
When your skin gets too oily, as it does in many teenagers, you're likely to develop pimples, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Excess oil can clog your pores, especially if it's combined with dead cells shed by your skin. Once you've got clogged pores, acne-causing bacteria can begin to grow in those blocked pores and create swollen pimples. Since acne has several causes, including bacteria and oily skin, you often need more than one medication to clear your complexion.
Duac CS contains 5 percent benzoyl peroxide along with 1 percent clindamycin, according to Drugs.com. Benzoyl peroxide helps to dry out your skin and also to kill the bacteria that cause acne. Clindamycin also helps to kill bacteria. Duac CS comes as a kit that contains a tube of Duac medicated ointment plus a bottle of skin cleanser that's designed to clean your skin without further irritating your acne. Most patients use the products twice every day, although you should follow your doctor's instructions. Common side effects include skin irritation.
Medical research shows that Duac CS works well to clear up acne. In one study, performed at Warsaw Medical University, researchers led by Dr. A. Langston compared patients treated with Duac CS to patients treated with Zineryt, another common prescription acne treatment. The study, published in the March 2007 edition of the "Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology," found that Duac CS began to clear many patients' acne within the first week and had cleared an average of 70 percent of acne lesions by week 12 of the study.
Reviewers on the website Acne.org report that Duac CS does work fast to clear up pimples. But for many people, it seems to stop working eventually, causing them to return to the doctor for a different medication. In addition, some people reported experiencing the skin irritation reported as a common side effect of Duac CS, and others noted that Duac CS costs more than over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products.
Regardless of whether you're using Duac CS or some other medication to clear up your acne, you'll need to take good care of your skin to prevent another outbreak. While using the Duac skin cleanser, avoid scrubbing your skin hard, and never pick at your pimples or attempt to pop them. Also, never use Duac CS at the same time as another acne medication unless your doctor has told you to do so.
