Effective Ways to Get Rid of Pimples

Acne and problem skin can mar even the loveliest skin--and no one wants a pimple on her face. Pimples can sprout due to hormones, excess oil in the skin and even stress, says the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). When you need to get rid of pimples and clear up a bad breakout, you can work to nip your pimple problem quickly. Having a good skin care routine and working with a dermatologist can also help prevent pimples and acne so that you have fewer pimples to deal with.

Regular Skin Cleansing

Wash your skin twice daily with a gentle cleanser (not a soap that can be harsh and drying to the skin), and follow it up with a light moisturizer. Avoid using water that's too hot, says the AAD, as that--coupled with vigorous scrubbing and washing--can aggravate problem skin and pimples. Washing will help remove dirt and oil from the skin that contributes to pimples. You should also wash your hair daily if it is oily, as that oil can stick to your skin and cause or worsen acne.

Apply a Topical Medication

Lotions, creams, gels, ointments, foams and other types of medications are available to treat acne by simply rubbing them into your skin. You can get these topical treatments over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription versions from a dermatologist. The active ingredient in these treatments is usually either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. These OTC preparations can treat pimples and destroy harmful bacteria in the skin that can cause or worsen a pimple, according to the Nemours Foundation. Other active ingredients can include lactic acid, resorcinol and sulfur, according to the Mayo Clinic. These products can also make pimples look better, says the Nemours Foundation, minimizing the swollen bump and redness.

Get a Prescription

Prescription topical treatments for acne are available through a dermatologist. Tazarotene, adapalene and tretinoin are all types of prescription acne medication that can be applied to the skin to treat severe or difficult-to-manage acne, says the Mayo Clinic. Some antibiotic medications can also be effective at getting rid of pimples quickly, as they can destroy the bacteria that gets into the pores and makes pimples erupt. Both oral and topical antibiotics may be used to treat acne.

What Not to Do

Do not expect or look for a miracle cure that works overnight, says the AAD, because that's just not how it works. Acne treatment can take time, and any quick-fix remedies may actually damage your skin and make your acne worse. The AAD says you should keep your hands off the pimple and your skin. Do not pick, squeeze or poke.
