For many people, commercial acne remedies effectively treat mild to moderate acne. For others, prescription medications become necessary. Unfortunately, both over-the-counter commercial remedies and prescription medications can be too harsh for sensitive skin. Besides, treating acne is costly, particularly when you test multiple products and medications to find something that works. Luckily there are effective home remedies for acne that are mild enough for sensitive skin and tough enough to treat breakouts. You can probably find the ingredients in your kitchen.

Egg Whites

Applying an egg white mask to the skin provides protein, tightens the skin and absorbs excess oil, which is a common problem for people with acne-prone skin. To use this remedy, break one egg and separate the egg white from the yolk. Pat the egg white onto your skin and let it sit for about 10 minutes. The mask should tighten quite a bit during this time. Rinse the mask off with lukewarm water. Lynda Fassa of Discovery's "Planet Green" recommends allowing the skin to air dry after rinsing to avoid disturbing the skin's acid mantle, which will help protect it from further breakouts.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar effectively reduces the bacteria on the skin that cause acne. It also balances the skin's pH level, or acidity. In addition to these benefits, it absorbs excess oil from the skin. To use this remedy, mix one part vinegar with three or four parts water. Use a cotton ball to apply the solution to the skin. Rinse the skin after about 10 minutes. If your skin is not too sensitive, you can leave the solution on overnight for extra acne-fighting power.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice effectively treats acne by unclogging pores and encouraging new skin cell growth. You can apply undiluted lemon juice to the skin, but some people may need to dilute it with filtered water to tolerate it, according to Dr. Randall Neustaedter of Cure-Guide. Use this remedy after washing your face by soaking a cotton ball in bit of lemon juice and applying it directly to the skin. You can rinse the solution off after 10 minutes, or leave it on until the next washing for a stronger effect.
