Effective Blackhead Removal
Blackheads occur when oil in the skin becomes trapped in the pore. When the oil is exposed to the air, it turns black, creating the black, pin-dot-like head for which a blackhead is known. Blackhead removal is often a taboo subject because picking at or manipulating the skin can cause skin scarring. However, blackheads may take time to eliminate without extraction. For this reason, it is important to remove a blackhead carefully and using sanitary methods.
Take a five- to 10-minute warm shower or place a hot towel over your face to open the pores. Blackhead extraction is easier when the pores are open.
Swipe cotton ball with an astringent on it over the blackhead area, recommends Michelle Occhipinto, staff writer for DERMADoctor, a skin-care resource website. This will help to rid the blackhead and surrounding skin of any bacteria that could possibly enter the pore while you are trying to remove it. You also should wash your hands thoroughly before attempting to extract the blackhead.
Wrap a cotton pad around your fingertips and place the fingers on either side of the blackhead. Gently press down on the area surrounding the blackhead--do not press too hard. You also can use a blackhead extraction device. This tool resembles a pair of tweezers and features a blunt end with a hole in the middle of the instrument. This allows you to use minimum pressure to extract the blackhead.
Swipe away the blackhead residue and any other contents away with a cotton ball.
Apply an oil-absorbing facial mask to the area from which the blackhead was removed. This will help to dry up the pore's contents, preventing future blackheads from forming. After the mask has dried sufficiently, rinse away with warm water.
