MayoClinic.com points to winter weather, too much sun, hot water and strong soap as the most common causes of dry skin. However, dry, rough skin can be the result of hypothyroidism or psoriasis, medical conditions that require diagnosis and treatment by a physician. If you suffer from dry skin, avoid the factors that can cause it and use over-the-counter dry skin creams as needed. Should these measures fail to bring relief, consult your health care provider.

Original Eucerin Crème

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics website suggests Original Eucerin Crème as a treatment for dry skin. On the website, Eucerin recommends the Original Crème to heal and protect skin that is particularly dry and sensitive. This product creates an occlusive seal that protects damaged skin by sealing in moisture. The original formula enhances the absorption of topical medications, Eucerin reports, and minimal ingredients ensure its suitability for everyone, including children. The product is non-irritating, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic.

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream

Cetaphil identifies its product as a non-greasy cream suitable for dry, sensitive skin on your face or body. The website asserts that the fragrance-free product supplies intensive moisture to hands, feet, knees and elbows---areas that are typically prone to dryness, especially during winter months. According to Cetaphil, dermatologists have recommended Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream to their patients with eczema and psoriasis for more than 20 years.

Moisturel Cream

The website of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology advocates the use of Moisturel Cream as a remedy for dry skin. Moisturel describes its therapeutic cream as highly protective, easily absorbed and non-comedogenic. The website boasts clinical proof of Moisturel's effectiveness at relieving dryness and further states that its product contains no parabens, lanolins or fragrances that can irritate or sensitize skin. Moisturel professes to be recommended by dermatologists and states so on their label.

Nutraplus Therapeutic Cream

An odorless, moisturizing cream, Nutraplus Therapeutic Cream touts its ability to hydrate and soften even rough, dry skin. Included in the list of dry-skin remedies on the website of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Nutraplus claims that the presence of 10 percent urea in its formula allows the cream to penetrate the skin and increase its ability to absorb and retain moisture. For this reason, the manufacturers of Nutraplus say that it is helpful in the treatment of persistent dry skin.
