Overview

When oil builds up in your skin, it can clog your pores and cause acne. Doctors at the American Academy of Dermatology report that it's not true that eating chocolate and greasy foods cause acne. Psoriasis, on the other hand, is influenced by diet. Whenever you have breakouts, there may be a link to your diet that your doctor can find if standard treatments don't clear up the condition.

Carbs

There may be a direct correlation between acne breakouts and the amount of carbohydrates you eat. According to a study performed by a group of Australian dermatologists and reported in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," a low-glycemic-load diet resulted in fewer acne lesions in a group of young men. By increasing their protein intake and reducing the amount of carbs they consumed, acne cleared up quicker than those who continued with a high-carbohydrate plan. To reduce the incidence of acne vulgaris breakouts, their diets consisted of 25 percent protein, 30 percent fat and 45 percent carbohydrates.

Deficiencies

According to The Allergy and Nutrition Centre, adult acne may be the result of low levels of B vitamins. A B-complex vitamin supplement may help clear up your acne-like lesions. Diets rich in fortified foods such as milk and cereal also can provide sufficient B vitamins in form of niacin, biotin, riboflavin and folic acid.

Myths

There is no correlation between acne breakouts and the food you consume; however, greasy food may worsen acne if it gets on your face. When the grease is left on your skin, it clogs your pores even more with additional oil and can create whiteheads or blackheads. The link between diet and psoriasis still is unclear, according to MayoClinic.com. Treatment with dietary changes works for some individuals and has no bearing on symptoms for others.

Balance

A balanced diet is the basis of all your good health, and that includes your skin. According to Science Daily, there may be an even greater link between eating a healthy, well-rounded diet and preventing skin disorders. A healthy diet includes sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables that are high in the antioxidants that clear out free radicals, which cause inflammation and acne and psoriasis lesions. Other components of a balanced diet include whole grains, fat-free or low-fat calcium sources and low-fat protein.
