Overview

Dry, flaky skin can be caused by a vitamin deficiency, dehydration or an allergy. It also may be caused by potentially serious health problems. If changing your diet and simple home remedies do not work to ease your itching, dry skin, make an appointment with your doctor. If your dry skin is cracked, bleeding or very painful, see your doctor promptly.

Vitamin Deficiencies

A lack of certain vitamins can reduce skin elasticity and suppleness. For example, a lack of vitamin C can cause dry, flaky skin, along with brittle hair, bleeding gums and nosebleeds. Foods containing vitamin C include citrus fruits, tomatoes, strawberries, red peppers and leafy green vegetables. If you are deficient in biotin, which is rare, you may experience dry hair, brittle nails and dry, scaly skin. Good sources of biotin include eggs, nuts and whole grains. You can also take a B-vitamin complex to boost your biotin level if you are deficient.

Dehydration

If you have not been drinking enough fluids or if you have been sick with vomiting or diarrhea, your dry skin may be caused by dehydration. Other symptoms are a dry mouth, headache, constipation, thirst and dark yellow urine. If your symptoms are severe, get medical help immediately. Otherwise, drink water or sports drinks to become more hydrated. If you have diarrhea, avoid fruit juices. Do not drink caffeinated beverages, as these may act as a diuretic and flush even more water out of your body.

Allergies

In some cases, food allergies may trigger eczema, a condition characterized by dry, itchy, flaky skin. This condition can affect anyone of any age, but is more common in children. If a food allergy is causing your dry, flaky skin, avoid including it in your diet. You might not know what you are allergic to; if this is the case, ask your doctor about being tested by an allergist. An allergist can perform a skin-prick

Other Tips

Dry, flaky skin can also be caused by dryness in the air or overexposure to the wind and cold. Cover your body well before going out in the wind. Run a humidifier in your home if the air is especially dry. Pat dry after a shower and apply a thick moisturizing cream while your skin is still damp to lock in moisture. You might also have an allergy to something that is touching your skin, such as a synthetic fabric or clothing washed in a new laundry detergent.
