Blackheads, also referred to as open comedones, occur when pores become clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells. The blackheads take on a yellow or blackened appearance when the oil is exposed to air and oxidizes. There are several beauty products available to remove blackheads that can pop up on the face.

Blackhead Removal Gun

This product vacuums out blackheads on the face without causing damage to surrounding areas of the skin. The plastic tools are placed over the blackhead and, when suction is applied, lifts the blackhead out of the pore. According to the Care Fair website, although they are not likely to hurt the skin, they are not likely strong enough to remove the blackhead without the aid of another blackhead treatment product.

Metal Blackhead Extractor

A metal blackhead extractor is fashioned from stainless steel and typically sold for use by professionals. Professional use is recommended due to the potential of scarring and skin irritation. There are two types of blackhead extractors, the metal loop type and a double spoon version. Both types are used in the same way. The end of the extractor is placed over the blackhead and then depressed into the skin. It gently pushes the blackhead out of the pore and can be wiped away with a tissue or the other end of the extractor. To avoid infection, an alcohol wipe is recommended to sanitize the extractor between uses.

Pore Strips

Pore strips are sold for home use and adhere to the skin in order to remove blackheads on the face. Most pore strips are pre-cut to fit the nose, a common area that blackheads appear. To apply, wet the face and then smooth the pore strip over the skin. After waiting 10 to 15 minutes for the strip to dry, you pull off the strip. The blackheads are meant to stick to the strip when removed. Risks of pore strips include skin sensitivity and the possible appearance of veins on the face.
