Overview

Cosmedix is a brand of facial peel applied on the forehead, chin and cheeks. A Cosmedix facial peel is used to rejuvenate the skin and peel the outer layer of dead skin cell. Chemical peels are used on people who want to reduce the signs of aging, remove oils, hydrate the skin, lighten skin discoloration and treat acne scars and pimples. Cosmedix facial peels are performed in spas or clinics by a professional.

Types

There are two types of facial peels available from Cosmedix. The first one requires significant preparation a few days prior to the procedure. For instance, smoking adds free radicals to the system, and patients should avoid smoking before having a chemical peel. The physician may also give you some pre-treatment creams or moisturizers to use two to four weeks prior to the procedure. Some chemical peels do not require pre-treatments. They can be done within 24 hours of a consultation.

Consultation

Before any cosmetic procedure, a licensed practitioner will sit down with the patient to evaluate his physical and mental state. For facial peels, the consultation is minor, and the patient's skin is assessed. The practitioner will give the patient the best options for the condition of the skin. For instance, a Cosmedix purity peel is more beneficial for someone who has acne scars. However, a rejuvenation peel is more beneficial for the person who wants an anti-aging procedure.

Function

As the name suggests, a chemical or facial peel is a procedure that removes or "peels" away the top layer of the skin. The top layer of skin is made of kerotin, which is dead protein cells pushed up by the bottom layer of the skin. This layer of skin gives the body a waterproof outer layer. This layer is removed during the Cosmedix procedure, and it helps stimulate the health of collagen and elastin, which are the two components that give skin its tightens and flexibility. When these skin components are damaged, it can lead to premature wrinkling and aging.

Time Frame

Most Cosmedix facial peels take approximately 45 minutes to complete. More advanced procedures take 60 minutes to complete. The consultation examines your skin tone and areas where you need facial work. A consultation takes approximately 30 minutes. A facial peel is a relaxing procedure where the patient is placed on a chair with the head tilted back.

Aftercare

After having a chemical facial peel, the patient is urged to stay out of the sun for at least two weeks. Since the Cosmedix peel removes the outer layer of the skin, the tissue is sensitive to UV lights and other environmental factors. There may be some redness, swelling or tenderness after a facial peel. Some flaking may occur after the chemical peel for two to seven days.
