Hormones are chemicals released by the body's cells to fulfill a variety of functions. When hormones cause acne, it's because the chemicals trigger oil-producing glands in the pores to produce more oil, which can clog pores. The hormones that are linked to acne breakouts, androgens, are produced in both males and females. An abundance of hormones are sometimes produced during menstruation, pregnancy, puberty and times of emotional stress.

Soap and Water

Cleaning skin with soap and water can reduce sebum production for several hours. A study by the Urban Life Research Institute in Tokyo found that people who showered in the morning measured less sebum on the outer layers of skin compared to people who did not shower. Pores clogged with sebum are one of the top causes of acne breakouts.

De-Stress

Stress is a known trigger for hormone-induced acne. A 2004 study published by the journal "Experimental Dermatology" linked hormones released by emotional stress to receptors in the sebaceous glands. New Hampshire Hospital published an article in 2005 indicating that psychiatric patients who participated in a yoga class experienced improved mood. The study led researchers at Dartmouth Medical School to theorize that yoga may be a useful way of reducing stress. Other proven methods for alleviating stress include meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Medications like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are the most recommended treatments for hormonal acne. Benzoyl peroxide works by killing the bacteria that causes pimples. Salicylic acid slows the shedding of dead skin cells inside the hair follicle and helps unclog pores.

Prescription Medication

Retinoids, such as Accutane, are prescription-strength derivatives of vitamin A. Retinoids are powerful drugs that reduce the size of oil glands by 35 to 58 percent and decrease the amount of oil produced by sebaceous glands by approximately 80 percent, reports Acne.org.
