Cream for Acne Scars
Scars are a constant reminder of an unfortunate struggle with acne, an injury or perhaps an illness such as chicken pox. Scars can have negative psychological consequences on top of their obvious physical signs. They can be difficult to treat effectively. Some over-the-counter creams may help fade scars, but they probably won't disappear completely.
Acne.org says superficial acne scarring may be successfully treated with resurfacing creams. These include over-the-counter products that contain Retinol (a type of vitamin A) such as Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer. According to Acne Resources.com, Retinol stimulates collagen production and helps soften and smooth the skin.
Prescription-only creams such as Retin-A and Renova also increase collagen production and encourage cell turnover. Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Zwiren says only extremely shallow scars can be improved by Retin-A.
Glycolic Acid & Vitamin C
Skin cream products that contain glycolic acid (Glycodermaor, Reviva) and vitamin C (EmergeniC,Citrix) may flatten raised acne scars. These active ingredients stimulate new collagen production and help fill out the skin. This can diminish the appearance of scars.
Additional Topical Products
A number of other over-the-counter scar treatments may be worth a try. Mederma scar cream is promoted to have the ability to reduce the appearance of acne scarring. StretchMarkCream.org says the active ingredient in Mederma is cepalin, a proprietary botanical extract derived from onions.
Curad Scar Therapy Cosmetic Pads contain polyurethane and are intended to help flatten raised scars. SyCream Scar and Stretch Mark Cream claims to works on many types of scars, as well as burns and bites.
Your dermatologist can advise you as to whether a scar cream is best for your needs. For deep scarring, more intense treatments such as prescription corticosteroid creams, microdermabrasion, fillers and chemical peels may be options. In severe cases, surgery and laser scar removal might also be considered.
