Cosmetics and Acne Cosmetics and Acne Cosmetics and Acne

Cosmetics contain such chemicals, which clog pores giving rise to Acne. This type of acne is known as acne cosmetica and is considered as a mild form of acne.
All teens in their early twenties and thirties suffer through this type of acne in which they develop small whiteheads in the region of their cheeks, chin and forehead. Cosmetic products are responsible for inducing whiteheads and blackheads into the skin, which later form papule and pustules. This condition is different in cosmetic acne because in other forms of acne papules and pustules are formed first and white heads and black heads appear later. The damaging effect of cosmetics on acne can be contributed to the presence of excess oil in the cosmetics. Like all other forms of acne, cosmetic acne when turned into scars gives a very ugly look. It is not necessary that you have a history of acne to become victim of this type of acne.

Majority of women are not ready to accept the fact that cosmetic really causes acne because this type of acne usually appears after several months of repeated use of any product. These women continue using cosmetic products and therefore often end up give rise to infection and scarring. Acne due to cosmetics occurs due to the chemical substance present in the product and not the complex processes that take place inside the body therefore compared to other types of acne it is easy to treat acne cosmetica. Once you stop using the product it gets disappeared after sometime.

Oils in the Cosmetics are the main culprits of causing acne. These oils go deep inside the pores and cause-plugging problem, as they are very efficient at penetrating the pores. The most common oily substance found in cosmetics is known as Lanolin. The fatty acids present in lanolin are responsible for aggravating acne conditions. In these also synthetic lanolins are more penetrating than natural lanolin. This substance although promotes smooth skin but also cause penetrating effects on the skin giving rise to acne. Besides lanolin Isopropyl Myristate, which leaves aggressive effects on the skin, is also found in many foundations. This substance although helps in smooth application of cosmetic products leaves a very aggressive penetrating affect on the skin. Therefore using water based creams or alcohol based liquids under your foundation can be very useful. Also using Matte or semi-matte, oil-free foundations can be very beneficial. Petrolatum and mineral oil also acts as best moisturizing ingredients.

In order to avoid Acne Cosmetics it is very important to use cosmetics that are labeled either "oil-free" or "noncomedogenic". Many people also belief that sebum (skins own surface oil) is beneficial for skin due to which cosmetic manufacturers now use substance like Myristate, D & C dyes and Blushers in their cosmetic products which are even more dangerous than natural sebum. Also the belief that sebum prevents wrinkles and moisturizes skin is completely wrong.

Besides oils and chemicals the fragrance of many cosmetic products could also be troublesome for many acne sufferers. Fragrance causes allergy and irritation to people suffering through any type of skin disease. Such sensitive people should use products labeled "fragrance-free" to ensure there are no traces of an irritant. Many Face and Eye Cosmetics such as blushes and eye shadows also have the ability of clogging pores giving rise to acne. Mica is the chemical that is present in these products which causes this situation. In order to find out whether a product has mica in it or not check whether it is a shimmery product because a shimmery product usually contains high level of mica in it. Also red tint in many blushes are coal tar derivatives, which are known for causing severe forms of acne.

Keeping in view the effects cosmetics leave on many skins many cosmetic manufacturers are now making "Oil free" or non-comedogenic cosmetic products. These are products which either contains little or no ingredients such as isopropyl myristate, lanolin and any other members of myristate family. The label oil-free guarantees that the product has no oily ingredients and is safe for oily or acne prone skin. But this is also a way of fooling people because instead of using complete non-oily ingredients these cosmetic manufacturers use chemicals, which come from synthetic sources rather than from natural sources and therefore are not completely considered as oil free ingredients. These synthetic oils are sometimes even more penetrating than natural oil. Therefore special care should be taken while purchasing such products because although they are labeled as "oil free," "dermatologist tested" and "hypoallergenic" but they are not always trustable. Hypo-allergenic are products that are although perfume-free but they may be harmful for acne sufferers. "Dermatologist-tested" means it has been tested for skin allergy and irritation but it can still affect skin pores.
